1. Check the state registration
California Business and Professions Code §9840 makes it unlawful to act as a service dealer without a current registration, and §9801 covers repairs of refrigerators, freezers, ranges, microwave ovens, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ice makers and other major home appliances. Registrations are issued by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services.
To check a company, open search.dca.ca.gov, choose “Household Goods and Services, Bureau of”, enter the business name and look for an active “Major Appliance Repair” record. The record shows the registered address and the original issue date.
Registration also tells you where a business really is. Quality Appliance Repair San Francisco lists a Burlingame address on Google but is registered at a San Francisco mail suite; Appliance Rescuers is registered at a mailbox in Dublin.
2. Ask about the service call before booking
Among companies that publish a price, the service call in this area runs from $75 to $100. Most credit it toward the repair if you approve the work. Ask two things on the phone: the amount, and whether it is credited. Stackable washer-dryers and double ovens can cost more — Appliance Rescuers, for example, charges $115 instead of $75.
3. Compare the warranty on labor, not just parts
Published labor warranties in this market range from 15 days to 1 year; 90 days is the most common. Several companies give a longer warranty on parts than on labor — Quality Appliance Repair San Francisco gives 12 months on parts and 6 on labor, Fix Force Repair 1 year and 90 days. If a company states two different terms, ask which one goes on your invoice.
4. Read listings critically

- 10 put a city name in the business name, such as “San Mateo Appliance Service”.
- 6 use a 209 area code, which belongs to California's Central Valley.
- Several established companies show a different phone number on Google than on their website. Call the number on the company's own site if in doubt.
5. High-end brands
Nine of the top ten name Sub-Zero on their websites. Delta High End Appliance Repair and Prime Fix publish the longest brand lists, including La Cornue and BlueStar; Commercial Home Products specializes in built-in refrigeration, professional ranges and outdoor kitchens. For built-in units, ask whether the technician has worked on your exact model line and whether parts are stocked or ordered.
6. San Mateo vs Burlingame
San Mateo has 16 active appliance repair registrations; Burlingame has 2 — Appliance Repair Today on Bellevue Avenue and Electric Express Appliance on Rollins Road. Most companies serving either city come from elsewhere on the Peninsula or from San Francisco, so check the service list and the arrival window when you book.
